KIA MOTORS SLOVAKIA IP monitoring system
As part of its business plans, KIA MOTORS CORPORATION, a leading Korean company, member of HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY holding, decided to build a production plant in Central Europe. In a fierce competition of Central European countries, it was Teplička nad Váhom near the town of Žilina in Slovakia that won this investment. ANECT a.s. became the winner of a tender for a communication infrastructure implementation project. To this end, IP-technology-based Cisco Systems communication technologies were designed and implemented. This project was successfully carried out from December 2005 to March 2006.
The situation before the project was started
During the preparation and implementation of the basic communication infrastructure, the customer presented the need for a company monitoring camera system with an internal video-circuit to be implemented. Its specifications required the system to be flexible as it was to be implemented in several stages.
Project's principal goal
The project's principal goal was to meet the customer's advanced requirements in building a perfect, reliable company monitoring camera system that implements several functions concurrently - from February to April 2006 as agreed.
How our project bid won
The bids for the project were being assessed from January to December 2005 and the three short-listed bids, which were given a more particular specification of the project, were assessed in January 2006. When assessing the bids, Kia Motors Slovakia (KMS) focussed on the entire preparation period during which intensive communication was taking place between KMS, ANECT a.s. and the CANEX connections subcontractor. The communication concerned mostly the following issues:
- Camera types
- analogue cameras with IP conversion
- IP cameras
- Monitoring centre
- layout design
- ergonomics and controls
- architectural design
- technical solution/wiring
- System functionality
- ensure good video signal transferred across the network
- guarantee the required picture quality for display
- functionality/authority of operators
- functionality/authority of administrators
- control of mobile cameras
- set the automatic camera tracking
- set different views of a certain group of cameras
- store data from cameras
- archive records
- link with other monitoring systems
The customer had selected the project offered by ANECT a.s. since it best met the exact KMS criteria. In our opinion, the most important selection criterion was the fact that during the one-year preparation period, the ANECT a.s. company along with CANEX connections, its subcontractor, provided KMS with efficient support in analyzing, designing and specifying an overall solution of the monitoring system in the KMS plant at Teplička nad Váhom. Representatives of the customer could personally check the functionality of the Axis IP cameras and the cWatch software during their visits to two CANEX's customers in Žilina. Subsequently, KMS staff could test the AXIS IP cameras borrowed for testing for 2 months. Another reason why the ANECT a.s. bid has won is that the IP cameras were successfully tested in the environment of the KMS Temporary Office where two IP cameras were installed at the plant's entrance gate.
Expected project functionality
The customer expected a project of monitoring system implemented at KMS plant to have the following functionality:
- Monitoring the material/production flows
- Monitoring adherence to the rules for safety at work
- Ensuring physical protection of buildings
- Monitoring incoming/outgoing vehicles
- Simple upgrade possible if needed
- Integration with other technologies and systems possible
Implementation of SK (EU) standards
Practical implementation
The KMS monitoring system was implemented after building a communication infrastructure since an LAN meeting certain quality and performance parameters forms an integral part of a good and reliable IP camera monitoring system. The implementation itself was preceded by a testing and preparation phase. During the testing phase, the AXIS IP camera types selected were tested. This was done directly on Cisco technologies designed for the KMS LAN, tested during staging at an ANECT testing laboratory (lab in the sequel). The successful outcome of the testing was corroborated by a trial installation of two AXIS IP cameras at KMS.
The preparation phase included the following activities:
- Inspecting the site and determining the position of each IP camera
- Approving the position of each IP camera
- Approving an implementation plan
The project's implementation phase began by installing data cable routes and wiring for each IP camera. Next the AXIS IP cameras were installed and connected to the LAN. During the implementation of the AXIS IP cameras in the infrastructure, functionality tests were carried out followed by final acceptance tests. The AXIS IP cameras and the control cWatch Enterprise software were supplied by CANEX connections, s.r.o.
The project implementation was finished by building a KMS monitoring centre containing, as its dominant part, a monitoring panel with 32 monitors and 2 large-sized Samsung plasma screens. The monitoring centre also includes a board for operators and visitors. The architectural design of the monitoring centre was supplied and implemented by M-Studio.
Along with the implementation of the monitoring centre, five ADVANTECH industrial servers were installed with disk arrays, which play an important role in uploading and storing the video signal from all the IP cameras. Industrial touchscreens designed by ADVANTECH were used to enable user-friendly and prompt control and switching of the IP cameras.
The servers and touchscreens were supplied by ELCOM GROUP, s.r.o. Related to this basic project, were its extensions such as further monitoring centres implemented (Datacenter Monitoring Room, Security Monitoring Room) or further IP cameras added not only for KMS itself but also for one of its subsuppliers - the Glovis Slovakia company, which is implementing logistics for the KMS producer and is connected to the unified communication infrastructure in the Teplička nad Váhom industrial park.
Summary of the basic parameters of the monitoring system:
- Number of monitoring sites = 4 (3 KMS, 1 Glovis)
- Number of 20/21"LCD monitors = 54
- Number of 42" plasma screens = 3
- Number of IP cameras installed = 98 (mostly mobile/PTZ cameras, some of them being stationary/fixed)
- Number of uploading servers with disk arrays = 7 (5 KMS, 2Glovis)
Principle of working and the technologies used
The KMS monitoring system is built on a unified communication infrastructure platform that, apart from the standard data, enables voice and video signal transfer. It is this sharing of different data types in a single IP network that makes it possible for a customer to use in full all the advantages of such integration including:
- distribution of the video signal from any IP camera to any screen (LCD, plasma) in the KMS network,
- distribution of the video signal (sent by a video server) to any screen (LCD, plasma) in the KMS network*,
- distribution of the video signal from IP cameras to uploading servers that can be connected to the KMS network „in any place ",
- viewing the records from IP cameras stored on uploading servers from any PC connected to the KMS network (depending on the access rights of a particular user).
*A system of an internal video-circuit, to which ANECT a.s. also contributes with its ideas, has also been integrated into the KMS communication network.
Already when making the overall design of the KMS LAN, we provided for the implementation of IP cameras and it was this fact that we took into consideration when designing the network to avoid changing the LAN itself when installing the IP cameras.
It was the correct fine-tuning of the LAN parameters required (QoS, Jitter, Packet loost, etc.) implemented and tested by ANECT a.s. engineers that had a major influence on the reliable operation of the KMS IP monitoring system.
The following technologies were selected and used for the project:
- communication infrastructure (LAN) = Cisco
- IP cameras = AXIS
- LCD monitors, plasma screens = SAMSUNG
- Uploading servers andtouchscreens = ADVANTECH
- Recording and detecting cWatch Enterprise SW = CANEX
The KMS communication network meets all the reference criteria for the Cisco Architecture for Voice, Video and Integrated Data (AVVID) area.
Reliability
The customer placed great emphasis on the monitoring camera system being flexible, reliable, and redundant. For this reason, all the system components - if possible - were designed as redundant with sufficient capacity.
Evaluation and outlook
The customer evaluates this project as a high-end one wishing to present it to its visitors.
"Successful point of KMS monitoring system came from distinctive 2 objects. We set about this solution with the purpose of equipment management and preventing safety accident. Also we prepared solution through the consideration with ANECT. We implemented this IP Web-Camera Monitoring system at the end. Finally, I would like to say: Thank you for your continuous support to succeed this project. I appreciate M-Studio's cooperation in CCR construction in order to keep the schedule on time and in excellent design. "
